Do you think rapping is considered “singing”? Yes or no?

I think a lot of rap songs include evident singing, so it might be hard to draw the line. like would you count nikki minaj and drake as rap artists? I think some rap is more sing-songy than others, but I’m not really familiar with the genre

Some rap songs have singing in it, but the rapping itself isn’t singing in my opinion.
But hey, some singing isn’t considered singing to me.

I love rap (not what is found on the radio…) and I think it can be considered singing. These are the definitions of “singing,” thought it was interesting:

a. To utter a series of words or sounds in musical tones.
b. To vocalize songs or selections.
c. To perform songs or selections as a trained or professional singer.
d. To produce sounds when played: made the violin sing.
2.
a. To make melodious sounds: birds singing outside the window.
b. To give or have the effect of melody; lilt.
3. To make a high whining, humming, or whistling sound.
4. To be filled with a buzzing or ringing sound.
5.
a. To proclaim or extol something in verse.
b. To write poetry.

Rap definitely falls under that.

I can both sing and rap and I can tell you, rapping is not singing. i think it’s harder.
That is because i wasn’t born with this ability or i haven’t cultivated it enough.

I don’t consider rapping to be just talk either. Anyone can talk but to rap it takes practice, good flow and rhythm, and a good grip on the meaning of the lyrics. I’d say rapping is more like reciting poems only harder.

I agree completely with shelby! It takes a certain talent to come up with those amazing lyrics that rhyme and so forth. But if you don’t come up with your own lyrics I give no credit

rapping to me, is more just talking, to a particular beat or tempo. singing is putting tunes into it. a lot of rap music features singing and i think almost any ear can spot the transition when it happens. it’s all music anyway :)

It’s set to music and has rhythm, so yes, it’s singing :)

I don’t believe it’s considered “singing”. I guess it would be be rhythmic poetry.
